Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Torrance Owner’s Guide
If you’re holding a Gelco chimney cap that’s rusted through, missing a lid, or no longer gripping the flue tile, here’s the short version: we stock Gelco-compatible caps and install them throughout Torrance, typically for $340 – $680 installed depending on flue size and roof access. Most jobs are done in under two hours, and we carry the common sizes on the truck, so you’re not waiting on a special order.

Most Torrance homeowners discover the cap failed one of two ways: water staining on the ceiling near the fireplace, or birds getting into the flue. Sometimes it’s simpler than that, the cap is just gone. A windstorm out of the Palos Verdes hills takes it clean off, and now you’ve got an open flue pulling rain into a masonry system that was never designed to stay wet.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes a pretty wide range of caps, and the installation method changes depending on which style you have. The most common in Torrance are the single-flue caps that slip over a square or round clay tile, either with a pressure-fit band or a set of corner bolts that tighten against the tile. These fit flue tiles from roughly 8″ x 8″ up to 13″ x 13″ square, plus round tiles in 6″ to 12″ diameter. If you have a multi-flue situation, that’s a different animal entirely, usually a custom-cut top-mount cap that spans both flues and needs to be fabricated to your chase dimensions.
Gelco caps come in stainless steel, copper, and galvanized finishes. Stainless is the one we recommend most often in Torrance, because the marine air here eats galvanized in about five to seven years. Copper holds up beautifully and looks sharp on Spanish and Mediterranean-style homes common in Old Torrance, but expect it to run $200 – $400 more than stainless for the part alone.
One thing to know: Gelco doesn’t put a model number on every cap. Sometimes it’s just a size stamp on the underside of the lid or nothing at all. If you’re trying to match a cap yourself, measure the outside dimensions of your flue tile, not the inside opening. Ordering to the inside dimension is the single most common mistake we fix for Torrance customers who tried to go it alone. And yes, we’re an independent chimney service, not affiliated with Gelco, but we install their caps regularly and know their sizing quirks.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. The cap’s lid seam has corroded or the screen has rusted out, letting rain come straight down the flue. In Torrance, this is usually the salt air working on a galvanized cap that’s past its useful life.
- You hear birds or scratching from the chimney. The side screen has a hole or has pulled away from the frame. Starlings and sparrows both nest in Torrance flues, and once they’re in, you need more than a cap replacement to solve it.
- The cap is visibly tilted or loose when viewed from the street. Wind off the coast works the corner bolts loose over time, especially on single-flue pressure-fit caps. If you can see daylight under one edge from the ground, the grip is failing.
- Rust staining running down the flue tile or chase top. When a galvanized Gelco cap starts to fail, it streaks orange down the chimney. The cap hasn’t fully failed yet, but it’s telling you it’s close.
- Draft problems that started recently. A cap that’s partially blocked by debris or a collapsed screen restricts the flue opening. If your fireplace suddenly smokes back into the room on days it used to draw fine, the cap may be the choke point.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard single-flue Gelco-style cap in Torrance, the installed price typically runs $340 – $680. That includes the cap itself, labor, roof access, and a full inspection of the flue while we’re up there. Stainless single-flue caps are the bulk of what we install, and they usually land around $380 – $520 installed. Copper runs higher, and multi-flue custom jobs can go $900 – $1,400 depending on the flue layout and chase condition.
Every quote includes a written price before we start, so the number you see is the number you pay. No add-ons once we’re on the roof. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to cap installs too: if the cap comes loose or something’s not right within a year, we’re back out free of charge. You’ll get before-and-after photos showing the old cap off and the new one seated, because if you can’t see what we did, how do you know we did it?

AfterDIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. If your roof is a low-pitch, single-story walk-up and you’re comfortable on a ladder, a single-flue slip-on cap is genuinely doable. You need the correct outside tile measurement, a cap rated for your flue, and a drill for the corner bolts if you’re going with a locking model. What you don’t need is to be on a second-story roof with a 6/12 pitch, because that’s where Torrance homeowners get hurt trying to save $200.
The part most people miss even on the easy DIY version: checking what’s below the cap. If the flue tile is cracked at the top, a new cap won’t hold. If the old cap failed because of corrosion, there’s a good chance the mortar crown has wear too. And if you get the measurement wrong because you measured inside the tile, you’ll find out on the roof with the wrong part in your hand. If you’d rather not deal with any of that, call us at (424) 358-3187 and we’ll bring the right cap, the right tools, and a camera to show you exactly what’s up there. Cory Mitchell is usually the one on the roof with a phone in his pocket, and as he puts it: “If I can’t show you a photo of the problem, it isn’t a problem.”
FAQs
A stainless Gelco cap in Torrance typically lasts 12 to 20 years, while galvanized caps often need replacement in five to eight years due to coastal salt air. Copper caps can go 25-plus years if installed correctly. The lifespan depends on finish, exposure, and how well the cap was seated on the flue tile originally.
In most cases, no. Once the screen has rusted through or the lid has corroded at the seam, spot repairs don’t hold up, and the cost of chasing rust on an older cap usually exceeds the cost of replacement. If the cap is structurally sound but just loose, re-seating and tightening is absolutely an option. Give us a call at (424) 358-3187 and we can tell you over the phone which situation you’re in.
A standard single-flue cap installation usually takes 45 to 90 minutes, including setup, removal of the old cap, and seating the new one. If we’re also doing a chimney sweep or replacing a deteriorated crown, the visit runs longer, but the cap portion itself is a fast job.
We stock the common stainless single-flue sizes on the truck and can install same-day in most Torrance neighborhoods, including Old Torrance, the Riviera corridor, and Southwood. Copper caps and custom multi-flue mounts are typically ordered and installed within a week. We also work with DuraFlex and HeatShield products, so if your cap failure exposed damage below it, we can handle the liner or crown repair in the same visit.
Ready to Get It Fixed?
If your Gelco cap is done, we’ll make it simple: a live person answers the phone, a written price comes before any work starts, and a background-checked technician shows up in a tracked window, not a four-hour guess. You’ll see photos of the old cap, the new cap, and the flue condition underneath. Call (424) 358-3187 for a free estimate, or to get one of our technicians scheduled for a look. We’ve been at this since 2003, and Torrance chimneys are home turf.
