Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Chimney Cleaning Before & After in Torrance, CA
We’ve been cleaning chimneys in Torrance since 2003, and we learned early on that homeowners don’t want a sales pitch. They want to see what’s actually inside their flue and what it looks like after we’re done. That’s why every single job includes before-and-after photo documentation under The Relay Visibility Guarantee. Here’s a look at real transformations, from the kind of chimneys we see all over Torrance, Lomita, and the South Bay.

Stage-Two Creosote Removal in a 1960s Torrance Tract Home
[Photo: Flue interior before cleaning – black, flaky stage-two creosote buildup]
[Photo: Same flue after cleaning – clean masonry surface, no visible creosote]
The homeowner here used their fireplace three or four nights a week through winter and hadn’t had it swept in years. The flue had a layer of stage-two creosote – the flaky, tar-heavy kind that ignites far more easily than loose soot. We ran a rotary brush through the full length of the flue, hand-scrubbed the smoke chamber, and removed a five-gallon bucket of debris from the firebox and damper area. The result is a flue that’s safe to burn in again. Photos went to the homeowner same day, as they always do.
Heavy Soot and Nesting Debris in a Torrance Hills Chimney
[Photo: Firebox before cleaning – soot accumulation and twig nesting debris visible]
[Photo: Firebox after cleaning – no debris, clean masonry surfaces]
Homes up in the Torrance hills get more than their share of critters looking for a warm flue. This chimney had no cap, and a bird had made itself at home. We removed twigs, feathers, and enough packed soot to block airflow at the damper. After a full sweep, we recommended a Copperfield chimney cap and installed it the same visit. The flue went from a blocked-off fire hazard to a working fireplace in about two hours.
Glazed Creosote Recovery on a Long-Neglected Wood Burner
[Photo: Flue interior before – glossy glazed creosote layer, the most difficult to remove]
[Photo: Flue after treatment – glazed creosote broken down and swept clean]
This one was nasty – glazed creosote is what happens when stage-two buildup bakes under high heat until it hardens into a shiny, tar-like coating. It’s the single biggest chimney fire accelerant we see in Torrance. Standard sweeping won’t cut it, so we applied a creosote treatment, let it work, then swept the flue thoroughly end to end. The before photo showed a flue that looked like the inside of a barbecue pit after a decade of neglect. The after photo showed bare clay tile. We told the homeowner straight: if that glaze had lit, it would have been a bad night. Now it’s clean, and we flagged a minor mortar gap near the crown that’s worth watching.
Smoke Chamber Debriding After Backdrafting Complaints
[Photo: Smoke chamber before – heavy soot buildup restricting airflow and causing smoke spillage]
[Photo: Smoke chamber after – walls scraped and brushed clean, restored airflow]
A common complaint in older Torrance homes is smoke rolling back into the living room. Often it’s not a structural issue at all – it’s a smoke chamber so caked with soot that the smoke has nowhere to go but back down. On this job, the chamber had nearly an inch of buildup on the corbeled brick. We debrided the walls by hand, cleaned the throat damper, and vacced everything out. The homeowner lit a fire the next night, and their smoke problem was simply gone. No masonry work needed, and we told them that plainly.
Gas Fireplace Service and Log Set Cleanup in a Torrance Condo
[Photo: Gas log set before – soot film on logs, dust on burner, yellow flame indicating dirty ports]
[Photo: Gas log set after – logs cleaned, burner ports cleared, clean blue flame]
Condo chimneys in Torrance are almost always gas, and a lot of owners don’t realize gas fireplaces need service too. This unit had a soot film over the log set and enough dust in the burner ports to turn the flame yellow, which is inefficient and can leave soot inside the firebox. We pulled the logs, cleaned everything with compressed air and brushes made for gas sets, and reassembled. The after photo shows a clean blue flame. It took under an hour, and the owner got photos before and after to confirm it was actually done.
