Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Damper Repair: The Torrance Owner’s Guide
Gelco damper repair in Torrance typically runs $240 to $560 installed, depending on whether we’re rebuilding the existing frame, replacing the damper plate, or swapping in a full replacement assembly. Most Gelco damper jobs take under an hour once we’re on the roof or inside the firebox, and we usually have the common parts on the truck. The way most Torrance homeowners discover a failed Gelco damper is pretty consistent: a draft that won’t quit, a firebox that fills with smoke when the fireplace isn’t even lit, or a damper handle that spins without actually moving anything.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco dampers show up in a lot of South Bay fireplaces, especially the top-mount style that sits on the chimney crown and seals with a cable running down the flue to a bracket in the firebox. The compatibility gotcha we see all the time in Torrance is this: Gelco made two cable-housing lengths, roughly 12 and 15 inches depending on throat depth, and if you or a previous handyman ordered the wrong length, the cable binds or won’t fully seat. The part number is stamped on the underside of the damper plate or on the cast frame, and that’s the first thing we photograph during the estimate. We treat Gelco as the reference brand here. In most cases, a quality aftermarket damper plate with the same throat dimensions works fine and can cut the part cost, but if the existing frame is still sound, we prefer to rebuild around it instead of tearing out the whole collar and requiring masonry patching.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing
- Cold air drops into the living room even with the damper closed. The damper plate has warped or the seal gasket (the soft band around the plate’s edge) has crumbled. In Torrance’s marine air, that gasket deteriorates faster than the desert would cause, because moisture and salt sit on it in the summer and the plate doesn’t get hot enough to dry it out.
- You see a gap of light around the closed damper. This means the plate is misaligned or the hinge pin has worn. It’s the single clearest indicator we document before any repair.
- The cable pulls with zero resistance or feels crunchy. The cable has snapped at the attachment eye or has frayed inside the housing. We see this most often on Gelco units that were installed with too sharp a bend through the throat.
- The damper handle moves but the plate doesn’t. The set screw on the cable clamp backed out. Easy fix if caught early, but it lets the plate flap in the wind, which eventually breaks the hinge.
- You find rust flakes beneath the firebox opening. That’s the damper plate or frame oxidizing from years of condensation. Coastal Torrance homes without a rain cap get this faster than inland ones.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the spread in Torrance: a simple cable replacement runs $160 to $220, a new damper plate on the existing frame is $240 to $330, and a complete Gelco rebuild with frame prep and new mounting hardware is $400 to $560. The variables are whether we can work from inside the firebox (cheaper) or need roof access for a top-mount unit, and whether the existing frame has enough solid metal left to anchor to. Every quote we give is a written, flat-price quote before we start, with the part line and labor broken out separately. The work includes cleaning the mounting surface, adjusting the cable for a clean pull, checking that the plate fully opens and fully seats, and a photo report so you can see the before and after. The repair is covered by our written guarantee for 365 days. If it fails within that year, we come back and make it right at no charge. Cory Mitchell and the crew won’t recommend a full replacement if a rebuild saves you money and gives you a working damper for another several years.
DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely measure your throat and damper dimensions, take a photo of the Gelco tag, and verify which cable length you have before calling anyone. That’s useful. What you should not attempt on your own is working on a roof-mounted damper or pulling tension cable through a flue without a proper ladder setup and a second set of hands. You’re not fighting garage-door springs here, but a slipped cable under tension can snap back fast, and roof work on a Torrance home with a tile or steep pitch roof is genuinely dangerous. If we’re being honest, we’d rather you call us at (424) 358-3187 and know it’s done right than spend a weekend cursing at a seized set screw.

FAQs
A Gelco damper in the South Bay typically lasts 8 to 15 years before the plate warps, the cable housing seizes, or the seal gasket hardens. Homes closer to the coast in Torrance tend toward the shorter end because the salt air accelerates corrosion faster than the inland neighborhoods see.
Yes, and we do it often. If the frame and hinge are sound, we can replace just the plate, the cable, or the seal gasket and have the unit working again for a fraction of a full replacement. We only recommend a full replacement when the metal is too far gone to hold a solid mount.
Most Gelco damper repairs are finished in 45 to 75 minutes on site, including setup, the repair, and the photo documentation walk-through. The exception is a full frame rebuild on a top-mount unit, which can run an extra 30 minutes for roof access and sealing.
We carry common Gelco damper plates, cables, and gasket sets on our service vehicles along with parts from DuraFlex and HeatShield, so most repairs happen same-day. If your unit needs a non-standard cable length, we can typically source it within 48 hours. Call (424) 358-3187 and we’ll confirm what’s in the truck before you book.
